LLC 3-year cost calculator by state
Pick a state. See the Secretary of State bill over three years — formation filing plus the recurring annual report or franchise tax — then optionally add a formation service and professional registered agent. Every figure comes from the same source-cited tables as the state hubs; nothing here is estimated.

Methodology, assumptions & sources
- State side — the same 3‑year figure published on each state hub and the cheapest‑states ranking: formation filing plus the recurring annual report, list, or franchise/annual tax for a plain domestic LLC over roughly three years. Where a state bundles other mandatory filings (for example California’s Statement of Information or Nevada’s initial list and business license) the published total already includes them; the “how this total is built” line under the table spells it out.
- Year split — Year 1 is the formation filing; Years 2–3 is the published 3‑year total minus formation. Some states bill recurring fees in year 1 too (California’s $800 is due within months of filing), so treat the split as orientation and the 3‑year total as the number that matters.
- Provider side — from the 3‑year provider comparison: cheapest advertised formation plan plus a professional registered agent for three years, state fees excluded so provider markup is visible. Upsells (EIN, operating agreement, compliance subscriptions) are excluded.
- DIY path — every state requires a registered agent; DIY means you or someone you trust with an in‑state street address serves. That is $0 in fees but costs privacy (your address goes on the public record) and availability during business hours.
- Excluded — expedites, name reservations, certified copies, newspaper publication (New York, Arizona counties), foreign qualification, and income, gross‑receipts, or sales taxes. Franchise‑tax callouts on this page are reminders, not additions to the total unless the hub already counts them.
- Verification — cells marked “verify” could not be confirmed on a primary source at research time; the hub page explains what to check. This is cost research, not legal or tax advice.
How to use this
Start with the state where you actually operate. Then use Compare against to test the popular “form in Wyoming / Delaware / New Mexico instead” idea: if your customers, employees, or inventory are in your home state, you will usually still have to foreign‑qualify there and pay its fees on top — a charter elsewhere is rarely a discount. The Wyoming vs Delaware vs New Mexico page walks through the trade‑offs.
Switch to DIY to see what the state alone charges. The gap between DIY and the cheapest tracked provider is the price of a professional registered agent and someone else handling the paperwork — about $289 over three years at the low end and $747 at the high end for the same statutory job.
